project save the star

I am gonna be damned for this entry, but I’m gonna go ahead and blabber anyway.

My family subscribes to the evening chinese newspaper and I’ve been bombarded by the recent hoo-hars of the Project Sooooperstar finale occupying every freaking inch of the front page. For the past few days, I’ve heard people talking about it and the media juicing every detail off it. So, I’m clueless. I’m clueless because I cannot make sense of the whole phenomenon, due to the fact that I did not watch a single episode of this local talent quest that adapts the format of “Idol” down right to the core. The only vague idea I have so far is that the champion is cockeyed (nevermind the fact he is blind, let’s look at the physical attribute), and that the pretty hot favourite lost out by a large margin to everyone’s astonishment.

I’m amused by the public’s reaction. As an onlooker at this whole media frenzy, I don’t find it all that difficult to comprehend. To understand this, you must first look at the audience this show reaches out to, how it differs from the crowd of S’poreans that watches American Idol and S’pore Idol. Basically you get more of the chinese-ed community, we are talking about ah mas, ah peks, uncles and aunties from the kopitiams and wet markets. In a nut shell, you get the “Jiang Hua Yu” audiences (who thinks Jack Neeo is a genius and possibly the farniest man alive and still pines for the ever mind blowing, hilarious Liang Por Por to make a comeback) watching this series and are the main source of income for the show.

Here’s my point, these people are the same people who watches the numerous Sunday charity shows on the Mediacork channels and donate money religiously (no life. stay home still spend money). People who have been trained subconsciously to sympathize, pick up the phone, and call to support a good cause. Don’t you think this has something to do with the win of the Sooooperstar?*ponders* I think these slightly unenlightened group of people, erm sorry I mean uneducated, I mean fucking stu…erm…nevermind. They must have felt too sorry for their own good and voted for the poor chap as though they were helping him run his kidney a while longer or something.

Well, that’s my two cents worth. I’m just really taking this whole phenomenon as a joke of sorts. I wonder if anyone I know personally called in to vote.If so, please don’t hate me, just get the hell away from me.
